A long-standing campaign against child product company Johnson & Johnson has recently successfully pressured the company into removing two harmful chemicals found in its products that have been linked to cancer. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has been asking Johnson & Johnson to remove the trace amounts of chemicals 1,4-dioxane and quaternium-15 from its products, including Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, since May 2009, according The Associated Press.

Several weeks ago, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics discovered that Johnson & Johnson had removed the harmful chemicals in their products sold in other countries, but not for the United States. Johnson & Johnson has stated that they will be working on removing the chemicals over the next two years, with some products, such as shampoo, seeing chemical removal earlier than others. 1,4-dixane is a byproduct from the process of making products gentler on skin, but has been identified as a possible carcinogen. Quaternium-15 is a preservative for cosmetics and other substances, but is known to produce formaldehyde, which can produce allergic reactions and other toxic side effects.
