CALIFORNIA TOMATOES RECALLED FOR SALMONELLA CONTAMINATION

If you have recently purchased California tomatoes, you might want to make sure that they have not been recalled. According to The Associated Press, Taylor Farms of Tracy, California has issued a voluntary recall of their Expo Fresh Roma tomatoes for salmonella contamination.

The tomatoes listed in the recall were packaged on September 5 and September 6, 2014 and sold primarily at several Costco locations in California. Other potentially contaminated products include Sicilian Vegetable Salad served at Safeway, Vons and Pavilions grocery stores in California with a use-by date of September 20 or September 21. No illnesses have been reported, yet.

Salmonellosis is a potentially dangerous infection that can result in four to seven days of diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. The majority of salmonella patients are able to fully recover without treatment, but the diarrhea can be so severe that it results in dehydration and serious complications. If the salmonella infection spreads from the intestines to the blood stream and is not treated with antibiotics, it can lead to death. The elderly and infants are particularly in danger of severe illness when suffering from salmonellosis, but all patients can suffer from discomfort and stomach pain.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are about 42,000 cases of salmonellosis reported every year including 380 deaths. The actual number of nonfatal infections could be 29 times greater because most cases go unreported.
