Understanding Burn Injuries

Burn injuries can occur under a wide range of circumstances, but, in general, there are five categories of burns, based on their causes:

  • Fire burns
  • Chemical burns
  • Electrical burns
  • Scalding burns

The circumstances under which these injuries may occur are also varied. An electrical worker may suffer an electrical burn while working with faulty wiring; a cup of excessively hot coffee can spill onto a person’s lap; a stove burner or house fire can burn any person who comes into contact with it; and other occupations can expose workers to dangerous radiation and chemicals, resulting in serious burns.

In many cases, a burn injury victim takes every precaution possible in order to maintain his or her safety, but an accident can still occur if the negligence of others contributes to an unpredictable hazard. It is unfortunate and unacceptable that the negligent or careless actions of others could cause such serious injuries.

Classifying Burn Injuries

The severity of a burn injury is classified under three types: first-degree burns; second-degree burns; and third-degree burns. First-degree burns cause damage to the epidermis, the outermost lawyer of skin. Second-degree burns cause damage to the epidermis, as well as the dermis, or second layer of skin.

And third-degree burns cause damage to both outer layers as well as the third layer of skin, the hypodermis, and the tissues underneath that layer.

Not only can burns cause redness, pain, and sensitivity, but also blistering, swelling, scarring, and, in serious cases, shock and even death. For second- and especially third-degree burns, infection is a serious problem and can lead to death.

Treating Minor & Severe Burns

For minor burns, immersing the affected area in cool water is commonly used as the immediate treatment of a burn, followed by antibiotic ointments.

For more serious burns, however, it is necessary to make sure the injured area is sufficiently sterilized before and during any antibiotic treatment. Though first- and even second-degree burns can usually heal completely without skin graft surgeries, third-degree burns don’t. Skin (or synthetic) graft surgeries are necessary for third-degree burns in order to cover the exposed tissues and encourage new skin growth.

Ultimately, all burns are painful and can cause long-term discomfort, but second- and especially third-degree burns can be excruciating and require multiple surgeries, long-term recovery, and rehabilitative care. Even after a person has healed, they may have to deal with unsightly scarring, which can result in psychological effects.
