Fighting for Chemical Burn Victims

San Jose Chemical Burn Lawyers

Call Today for Trusted Legal Counsel – (800) 900-0863

Chemical burns are evaluated according to the standard burn classification used for fire, scalding, and other burns. In other words, they will be graded as first degree, second degree, or third degree, depending on how deep they go, how destructive they are to the dermis and hypodermis, whether they blister or not, and whether they damage the body's ability to retain heat and maintain fluid levels.

If you would like to pursue compensation for the damages you have suffered from the burn, our San Jose chemical burn injury attorneys can guide you through your injury cases.

Understanding Your Chemical Burns

Chemical burns may involve a gamut of substances, such as:

  • Solvents
  • Acids
  • Reducing agents
  • Oxidizers

Exposure to such substances can lead to profound and painful injuries all over the body.

You can be burned by substances commonly found in the home, such as:

  • Ammonia-based cleaning agents
  • Nail products
  • Paint thinners
  • Chemicals at work

Both strong acids and strong bases can disturb and even permanently injure the skin. Common burning acids include sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Common burning alkaloids include lye, silver nitrate, and lime. Unlike scalding and fire burns, chemical burns may not require "heat" to do damage. Simply the contact between the dangerous chemical and the skin can lead to pain and injury.

In some cases, the burn will create immediate sensation and damage. In other cases, the chemical contamination may not even be noticeable for days. Burns that afflict the eyes, mucus membranes, lungs, and other orifices may be particularly painful and damaging.

Symptoms of Chemical Burns

The nature and intensity of symptoms will depend on many factors, including the type of chemical exposure, the nature and quickness of your first aid, and your body's natural sensitivity to the substance.

Common indicators might include:

  • Itchiness
  • Sensation of burning
  • Necrosis of tissue
  • Darkening or bleaching of the skin
  • Inflammation
  • Redness

Note that different chemical burns must be treated differently. It is very important to identify the substance(s) that burned you as best as you can. For instance, in certain chemical burn cases, it may be appropriate to flood the area with water. In other cases, adding water to the burned area may actually exacerbate the injury -- that is, water irrigation can make your problems worse.
