When Do Most Truck Accidents Occur?

Despite advances in modern technology, including GPS satellite tracking, electronic logbooks, crash avoidance systems, and more, truck accidents are still startlingly common. Many truck accidents have several factors in common. One such factor is the day and time when these crashes occur.

Truck Accident Trends

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 4,136 people died in large truck crashes in 2018. These fatal accidents had several things in common, including the following:

  • 96% of vehicle occupants killed in two-vehicle crashes involving a passenger vehicle and a large truck in 2018 were occupants of the passenger vehicles.
  • 11% of all motor vehicle crash deaths in 2018 involved large trucks.
  • 74% of deaths in large truck crashes in 2018 were in crashes involving tractor-trailers and 27% were in crashes involving single-unit trucks.

Additionally, the truck accidents involved in the study shared similarities in the location, day, and time they occurred.

  • WHERE? 52% of truck accident deaths occurred on major roads other than interstates and freeways, 33% occurred on interstates and freeways, and 14% occurred on minor roads.
  • WHEN? 50% of truck accident deaths occurred from 6 AM to 3 PM. 16% of truck accident deaths occurred on Saturday and Sunday.
