Is a Traumatic Brain Injury Permanent?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs after a blow or jolt to the head. This type of injury can occur in any incident that involves blunt force trauma, including auto accidents, sports accidents, assaults, and more.

The severity of the blow will determine whether a victim receives a mild, moderate, or severe TBI. Each level of TBI has different recovery periods.

Below, our San Jose personal injury attorneys discuss the permanence of certain TBIs.

The Recovery Prognosis for a Traumatic Brain Injury

Mild, moderate, and severe TBIs have vastly different recovery prognoses.

In general, a TBI is considered mild when the victim experiences symptoms including, but not limited to, the following:

  • A loss of consciousness for a few seconds to a few minutes
  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Loss of balance

Typically, mild TBIs will resolve on their own in days to weeks with proper rest and treatment. The earlier a TBI is diagnosed, the better the victim’s prognosis.

Moderate to severe TBIs, on the other hand, are more complicated. Most of the time, a TBI is considered moderate or severe when the victim experiences symptoms including, but not limited to, the following:

  • A loss of consciousness for a few minutes to a few hours
  • Persistent headaches
  • Repeated nausea and vomiting
  • Seizures
  • An inability to awaken from sleep

Those suffering from moderate to severe TBIs have more complicated recovery prognoses. Sadly, even with treatment, these victims may experience debilitating symptoms for the remainder of their lives.
