Cupertino Boy Drowns in Backyard Spa

Cupertino Boy Drowns in Backyard Spa

The Bay Area got a tragic reminder of the dangers of swimming pools and hot tubs when a 1-year-old boy drowned in a backyard spa. According to a Mercury News report, the fatal drowning occurred on the 10000 block of Anson Avenue in Cupertino. Officials say the boy was being watched by someone at the home, but was able to get outside and into the spa. Emergency responders performed CPR but were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. It is unclear if the home had an alarm on the back door or if a fence surrounded the spa.

This tragic accident occurred just two days after an 18-month old boy was killed in a swimming pool in Antioch. These types of incidents are relatively common, and now that summer is upon us, it is highly likely that they will begin to happen more regularly.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there were about 390 annual drowning deaths for children under the age of 15 between 2008 and 2010. There were also 5,100 pool- or spa-related submersion injuries involving children each of those years. Some of those nonfatal injuries resulted in permanent disabilities such as brain damage.

If you own a pool or spa, it is crucial that you do everything you can to help prevent drowning accidents. Under the California Pool Safety Act, you must have a fence, wall, or other barrier that isolates the swimming pool from access to the home. You must have exit alarms as well that sound when any door or window to the pool area is opened.

It is also advisable to never allow children in the water without close supervision and to take CPR classes to acquire the lifesaving skills you will need in the event of an emergency.
