10 People Injured in San Jose DUI Crash

A 22-year-old man was arrested after leaving the scene of an accident involving eight vehicles and 10 injured victims. According to an ABC 7 News report, the hit-and-run accident occurred on Ocala Avenue and Capital Expressway near the Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose. Officials say the driver of a Mercedes Benz ran a red light, broadsided a vehicle, rolled over and crashed into several other vehicles.

Three people were trapped inside the Mercedes and sustained injuries. Seven other people were sent to nearby hospitals as well. The driver attempted to flee on foot, but was captured by police officers. The investigation is underway, but speed and alcohol appear to have been contributing factors in the crash.

Alcohol continues to contribute to a significant number of serious injuries and fatalities in San Jose. According to CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 39 fatalities and 3,682 injuries reported as a result of San Jose car accidents in the year 2011. Of those accidents, 18 fatalities and 385 injuries were alcohol-related. That means that nearly half of all San Jose traffic deaths that year were related to DUI drivers.

With Labor Day approaching, it is important for all drivers to take the necessary steps to prevent tragic DUI collisions. If you are out drinking, remember to call for a taxi or have a sober friend drive you home. Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your judgment, delay your reflexes, impair your vision, reduce your concentration and alter your understanding of sensory information.

If you or a loved one is ever injured by a drunk driver, you would be well advised to contact the authorities right away. Collect contact information from everyone who witnessed the crash, take photos of the crash site and seek out medical attention right away.

If you sustained a serious injury, financial support may be available for your lost wages, pain and suffering, medical bills and other related damages. If you are not offered fair compensation for all of your losses from the at-fault driver’s insurance provider, you may wish to further explore your legal options. An experienced San Jose personal injury lawyer will be able to guide you through a complex legal process and help you obtain justice and fair compensation for your losses.
