FOR NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH, CONSIDER EMPLOYEE WELLNESS

June is National Safety Month, and the National Safety Council (NSC) is observing the event by focusing on four separate areas of employee health and safety. One week of the month is dedicated to considerations of employee wellness.

Although employee wellness may not seem to be immediately connected to safety and health at work, studies show that practicing wellness-based behaviors like eating well and getting regular exercise protects employee health, reducing lost time due to sickness and increasing productivity. Employees who practice regular wellness behaviors are also more likely to recover more quickly and completely in case of a workplace accident.

To improve your own wellness for work and hobbies, consider adding healthy habits to your daily routine, such as:

  • Eating well. Fill half your plate at each meal with fruits and vegetables. Choose lean protein and healthy fats like those found in olive oil, nuts, and avocado.
  • Drink plenty of water. Eight to ten glasses of water a day are recommended for most people. Resolve to make water your first-choice beverage whenever possible.
  • Stay active. Taking a brisk walk at lunch, joining a sports team, or going to the gym are all easy and fun ways to take a break and stay healthy. Even stretching for a few moments during the work day can help improve your overall comfort and health.
