PET Scan Technology Offers New Hope For Diagnosing Chronic Brain Trauma

A brain-imaging technique developed by researchers at UCLA recently may hold the key to diagnosing patients with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition that results from multiple traumatic brain injuries (TBI) over a period of time, according to a recent report in Medical News Today.

The technique uses PET scans to identify the presence of unusual tau proteins inside the brain. The presence of these proteins is linked to CTE and to other degenerative brain conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. Prior to the development of the brain-scan testing, the only way to locate and identify the telltale tau proteins was through an autopsy – meaning that patients could not be definitively diagnosed until their conditions had already proven fatal.

UCLA researchers have already used the method to examine the brains of several professional football players, some of whom were showing other symptoms of CTE after years of brain injuries on the field. Symptoms of this condition include confusion, depression, memory loss, mood problems, suicidal ideation, and progressive dementia, along with physical difficulties like problems with walking and tremors. Researchers believe that early detection of tau particles can lead to earlier and more effective treatment, which may save or prolong patients’ lives.
