PREPARING YOUR POOL FOR SUMMER? TAKE THESE TIPS WITH YOU

If you own a pool or a hot tub, it’s never too early to start planning for safety when swimming season arrives. Thousands of people are injured in swimming pool accidents each year, and most of them are young children, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

If you’re planning to open your pool or hot tub for the season, you can start from the very first day to practice pool safety that will ensure injuries don’t spoil your summer fun. Consider the following tips:

  • Check local rules and ordinances. Many areas have specific rules regarding pool construction and safety. Follow these to improve safety as well as to avoid fines.
  • Check your pool deck, diving board, and ladders for wear and tear. Replace surfaces with non-slip materials if they show signs of damage or worn spots that can cause someone to slip or trip.
  • Examine electrical connections. Mice and other small critters like to spend winter in electrical boxes and sheds, where they may do damage to wires and connections that could cause electrocution or fire. Have a licensed electrician repair any damage.
  • Walk the fence line and check for damage. This includes gaps, worn boards or broken links, loose poles, and other hazards. Your pool or hot tub should be surrounded by a fence at least six feet high, and the gate should lock securely.
