MOTORCYCLE SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S CONCERN

M ost motorcyclists who ride regularly take safety seriously. Many of the same things that make motorcycle riding feel like freedom also make it more dangerous, so bikers equip themselves with helmets and padding, ensure their bikes are in good working order, and pay attention to the roads in order to reduce the risk of an accident.

Unfortunately, while motorcyclists can go to great lengths to protect themselves and their passengers, they don’t control the behavior of others on the road – with dangerous and even fatal results. In 2008, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 5,290 bikers lost their lives on U.S. roads and another 96,000 were injured.

Here are just a few ways that others on the road can help motorcyclists stay safe and avoid injury:

  • Pay attention. Distraction causes accidents, whether you’re driving, on a bicycle, or on foot. Focus on where you’re going and scan for obstacles that might cross your path. If you need to answer a cell phone or deal with another distraction, wait until you can stop in a safe place.
  • Help keep roadways clear. Motorcyclists are at an increased risk of “wiping out” due to snow, spilled oil, trash, and other debris in roadways. Keep the roads in front of your house and your driveways clear if you can.
  • Follow the rules. Speeding, turning out of the wrong lane, and other behaviors may seem safe to drivers, but they can cause serious harm to motorcyclists. Obey the rules of the road to give motorcycles and others a fighting chance.
