Abandoned Pickup Truck Causes Fatal Chain Reaction Crash on Highway 101 in San Mateo

San Mateo Police are currently investigating why a pickup truck was left abandoned in the fast lane on Highway 101 in San Mateo, which lead to a fatal car pileup shortly after midnight on July 8. A total of four vehicles crashed after a car collided with the abandoned truck, killing one and injuring another in the lead vehicle, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

This San Mateo fatal car crash was the result of a white pickup truck crashing into the center median of Highway 101 and the driver fleeing the scene on foot. Shortly afterwards, a Mazda 3 collided with the abandoned vehicle, followed by three more vehicles: a Ford van, Honda Civic, and Honda Accord. The collision resulted in serious head injuries for the driver and inflicted fatal head trauma to the rear passenger.

The driver of the abandoned truck turned himself in to the police later that morning. It has been reported that he gave a statement concerning the crash, but it has not been revealed and no charges have been filed at this time. It has not been stated whether the truck was disabled from the crash, but it is illegal to make a nonemergency stop on a freeway.
