Headed for the California Mountains? Prepare for California Winter Driving

The popular image of California is of a state that is hardly ever visited by inclement weather. While southern California does tend to stay sunny and warm most of the year, residents of California’s northern areas and mountains know that the dangers from snow and ice on California roads can be very real.

Here are some tips from the California Department of Transportation for safe winter driving in California’s often-snowy mountains:

  • Prepare your car. Your car’s brakes, windshield wipers, heater, defroster, and antifreeze levels should all be checked before you head into the mountains. A quick examination can help prevent an accident.
  • Bring the right tools. Snow chains can help your vehicle make it through heavily snowed-in areas if needed. A portable shovel, an ice scraper, a flashlight, and a bag of sand or gravel to help with traction can all make a big difference if your vehicle goes off the road in winter weather.
  • Prepare yourself. In addition to preparing your car, bring along things you’ll need to stay healthy and safe if you have to wait for assistance. Extra winter clothes, blankets, food and water, and a first aid kit can all help in an emergency.
  • Charge your phone. Make sure your phone has a full charge so you can call for help if needed. Some motorists also like to put a backup disposable phone in their winter driving kits in case of emergency.
