Possible listeria contamination has caused Ready Pac Foods Inc. to recall various products containing apples from restaurants and markets from across the United States. The company, based in Irwindale, CA, is recalling a total of 293, 488 cases and 296,224 individually distributed units of products, according to CBS News.
The apples were possibly contaminated with listeria monocytogenes found
on equipment used in one of its subsidiaries. The recalled products include
sliced apple packs, fruit and maple oatmeal, and fruit and walnut snack
trays at McDonald’s restaurants in various states. Additionally,
the apples were used in Burger King sliced apple packs and various fruit
packages and mixes sold at different supermarkets, altogether affecting
36 states and the District of Columbia.
While no illnesses have been reported so far in connection with the recalled
products, those who ingest listeria can suffer from listeriosis infection.
Listeria food poisoning symptoms include fever, confusion, convulsions,
diarrhea, muscle aches, and headaches. Listeriosis can be deadly for newborns,
adults with compromised immune systems, the elderly, and pregnant women.
