22-Year-Old Passenger Killed in I-680 Pleasanton Crash

A crash near the onramp to Interstate 680 in Pleasanton shortly after midnight on August 18 led to the death of a 22-year-old woman. The woman was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed after the driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel, according to The San Jose Mercury News.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the accident around 12:20 am after receiving reports of a convertible in a ditch near Bernal Avenue. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident while the driver suffered unknown, but non-fatal, injuries. Investigations into the Pleasanton auto accident are continuing, but falling asleep at the wheel is believed to be the main cause.

The fatally injured passenger was a graduate of basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

According to the CHP, a total of 2,520 people died in California auto accidents in 2010, and while this is the result of a steady decrease over the span of a decade, it is still one of the highest in the nation. Additionally, August commonly has one of the highest amounts of fatalities during the year.
