Restaurant-chain Chipotle Mexican Grill has been at the center of a major
health crisis after hundreds of people nationwide have contracted serious
illnesses after eating the restaurant’s food. Since July 2015, Chipotle
customers have suffered from two norovirus outbreaks in Simi Valley, California
and Boston, Massachusetts, two separate E. coli outbreaks, and one Salmonella
outbreak in Minnesota. These highly-contagious foodborne illness cause
severe vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and can potentially be fatal
if consumed by the elderly or those with weak immune systems.
Multiple lawsuits have been filed against Chipotle, one of which alleges
that the chain tried to cover up one of the outbreaks by closing its Simi
Valley location for “staffing reasons,” in the face of reports
of customer illnesses. Instead of reporting the outbreak, the location’s
employees allegedly tried to dispose of contaminated food and replacing
sick employees with employees from other restaurants.
Chipotle has experienced substantial financial losses since the news of
these outbreaks hit the media, resulting in sales drops and a 42% nosedive
in the company’s stock prices. In response, the company closed all
of its locations for a few hours on February 8th, 2016 to focus on food safety training and has been offering discounted
food in an effort to regain consumers trust. For those who have been sickened,
however, it is likely that no amount of training or enticing deals will
ever convince them to trust the chain again.
