A 65-year old woman was fatally struck and killed near Fite Circle, just south of Horn Road, just east of Sacramento. The woman was walking to work the morning of the collision; police suspect she was trying to cross the road either at the crosswalk or just short of it when the driver, a 56 year-old woman ran into her. Witnesses say the woman was taking her usual route to work at VSP Optical laboratories when she was struck down by the motorist.

The driver, who failed to stop, was eventually arrested a few miles away from the fatal accident, on felony hit-and-run charges. The accused motorist was held at the county jail on $75,000 bail. The investigation is still on-going and police are encouraging anyone with additional information to call the Rancho Cordova police as soon as possible.

What is a Hit-And-Run Accident?

Hit-and-run accidents in California are all too common, with LAPD reporting that 20,000 new cases are reported annually. Of those, 4,000 end in severe injury or death. These are staggering numbers when you consider the price that victims, their families and even perpetrators must pay following a hit-and-run. According to California Vehicle Code, Section 20001 – “ The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident…” Failing to do so, while not only being morally reprehensible, can result in heavy fines of up to $10,000, a prison sentence of up to 3 year and any combination of the two.

What If I’ve Been Injured?

If you or a loved one has been adversely affected by the gross negligence of a hit-and-run driver, it is time to contact an experienced personal injury lawyer. Depending on the extent of the damages and injuries, you may be entitled to compensation. Additionally, if a loved one died as a result of his or her injuries you can file a wrongful death suit against the hit-and-run driver.
